Want to be successful in your weight loss? Choose One thing at a time…..

Changing one habit at a time:

Changing your eating and exercise habits one habit at a time is important to start to live a healthy lifestyle. Most people at the beginning of the year are so excited about losing weight they make the mistake of trying to change EVERYTHING ALL AT ONCE and get burned out by February. The good thing about failure is that you can correct and pick up anytime you want. Its the end of June clean slate….

Something as easy as replacing that bag of chips for some carrots at lunch time, drinking a glass of water before each meal or eating slowly….. putting your fork down in-between chewing can help you make baby steps toward your overall healthier lifestyle goal!

In the book The Power of Less, author Leo Babauta emphasizes this point in stating:
He noticed the following:
  • When he tried to change only one small thing in his life, he succeeded at doing so about 85% of the time.
  • When he tried to change two things simultaneously, he succeeded only about one-third of the time.
  • When he tried to change three or more things simultaneously, he almost neversucceeded.
One change at a time. One task at a time.

The power of less

The only way you’ll form long-lasting habits is by applying the Power of Less: focus on one habit at a time, one month at a time, so that you’ll be able to focus all your energy on creating that one habit.

  • Select one habit…only ONE HABIT PER MONTH. You can choose any habit- whatever you think  will have the biggest impact on your life.
  • Write down your plan. You will need to specifically state what your goal will be each day, when you’ll do it, what your “trigger” will be, who you will report to… (need help in picking out a SMART goal? click here…..https://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/SMARTgoalsWS-NN.pdf)
  • Post your goal publicly. Tell as many people as possible that you are trying to form your new habit.
  • Report on your progress daily. Tell the same group of people whether or not you succeeded at your goal.

Here is a Ted talk about doing just one thing….by making a small attainable goal it gets you working toward your overall goals.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdKUJxjn-R8

So what is your ONE goal for the month? Work on that one goal and do a happy dance!
